Nursing in General Practice (NiGP)
Overview
The nursing in general practice program (NiGP) vision is for every general practice in Australia be supported and encouraged to employ or have access to a general practice nurse. Increased capacity in general practice provided by using the services of practice nurses will improve the quality and accessibility of primary care for patients, particularly those with chronic disease and/or complex conditions.
Studies indicate nurses can bring a number of benefits to a practice. These include improved health outcomes in chronic disease, assistance in primary-acute care integration, better co-ordination of care, increased workforce capacity, the provision of practical and professional support to GPs and an enhancement in the range of services available to people attending general practice.
Key Objectives
The NiGP is a key program under the Australian Government’s Nursing in General Practice Training and Support Initiative 2005 – 2007. GPV has agreed to accept the funding and to work with Victorian divisions to meet the objectives of the program which are:
- to build the capacity of divisions to deliver support services for nursing in general practice, in particular to recruit and retain nurses in general practice
- to broker, co-ordinate and fund education and professional development opportunities for nurses in general practice in collaboration with Victorian divisions.
