Representation

Overview

GPV functions as the central contact between divisions and other state-wide organisations interested in health system development in Victoria. The GPV role in the state health system is to present the views of Victorian divisions and GPs with a particular focus on enabling the health system to work more effectively with general practice. Coordination between general practice and other components of the health sector will contribute to improved health care delivery and to improved continuity of care.

GPV provides representatives for committees:

  • auspiced by a statewide body, or which have a statewide brief. (AGPN deals with the national level; divisions deal with the local level.)
  • genuinely needing GP/division input
  • with aims and activities that are in line with GPV's strategic goals.

Representation can take a number of forms. GPV may:

  • send a staff member as a representative;
  • through divisions call for nominations from interested GPs and then select the most appropriate GP;
  • seek and provide feedback from all relevant divisions; and/or
  • seek and provide feedback from the Board of GPV comprising 8 GPs from across Victoria.

The decision about the most appropriate form of representation is made by the CEO of GPV in conjunction with the requesting organisation. More information is available in the GPV representation policy

GPV is funded by Dept of Health Vic to pay GP representatives requested by DoH committees. Other organisations seeking GP representatives are requested to pay for representative GPs, at the GPV rate, in recognition of the time taken away from practice where income is foregone.

Objectives

  • To provide high quality representation of general practice and divisions of general practice to appropriate committees (including advisory committees, reference groups, working parties, management committees) and consultations.

  • To provide input to other organisations regarding the views, capacities, priorities and needs of Victorian divisions of general practice and their members, and in turn receive information and input about the policies and priorities of other stakeholders affecting the work of general practice.

  • To build up GPs' skills and experience in high-level representation, negotiation and policy development, and thus to provide both a form of professional development and a potential component of a career path for Victorian members of divisions of general practice.
